The Statue of Liberty features a female figure\nof the pagan goddess Libertas<\/em> (the\ngoddess of Liberty who was widely worshipped in ancient Rome, especially among\nfreed slaves). Lady Liberty is clothed with a flowing gown (sculptures of Roman goddesses were often partly or totally naked). The pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty is mounted has a hallow rock\ncontaining the Declaration of Independence. The Statue of Liberty is an icon of hope and freedom for millions of immigrants who pass through New York Harbor, the gateway to America, a passport to start a new and better life. The song says it well, \u201cAs\nthe statue liberates the citizen, so the cross liberates the soul. Oh, the\ncross is my Statue of Liberty, it was there that my soul was set free; unashamed\nI’ll proclaim that a rugged cross is my Statue of Liberty!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consider this, if a false, pagan, Roman goddess can inspire hope and aspirations for political freedom to millions, how much more can the one, true, heavenly GOD (JESUS) bring hope and spiritual freedom to those who look to and kneel at the cross! We thank God for our political freedom, but we thank Him even more for our spiritual freedom. As the Scripture inscribed on the Liberty Bell declares, \u201cProclaim <\/em>liberty<\/em><\/strong> throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof\u201d <\/em>(Leviticus 25:10, KJV). At the foot of the cross was a crushed serpent\u2019s head representing the deliverance from slavery to sin, self, and Satan (Genesis 3:15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
